RAWGraphs is a tool that converts tabular data into visualisations for designers, analysts and researchers so they can make and export charts without coding.

Overview

RAWGraphs is a web-based data visualisation tool (also available as open-source). You upload or paste tabular data, choose a visualisation template, map data fields to visual variables, then export a final graphic (SVG/PNG) for use in reports, websites or vector editors.

If you’re working with spreadsheet data (CSV/TSV/JSON) and you need more flexible or unusual chart types (sunbursts, dendrograms, alluvial flows, etc) — but you don’t want to code from scratch — RAWGraphs bridges that gap. It lets designers, researchers and analysts get good-looking visuals quickly and export them as editable vector graphics, rather than locked bits of BI. And because it runs in-browser and is open source, there’s trust and flexibility.

You load data (upload CSV/TSV, paste or reference a URL/SPARQL endpoint). You pick a chart type from a gallery (~30 templates). You map your data columns (categories, numeric values, time, etc) to chart dimensions (axis, size, colour). You tweak styles. Then you export to SVG or PNG (or a RAWGraphs project file) for further editing or embedding. All processing happens client-side (in browser) so your data isn’t uploaded to a server.

Best for

Designers, researchers, data journalists, analysts who want to generate static visualisations quickly and export editable graphics without heavy BI setup. Also good for teams that need custom vector graphics rather than dashboard lectures.

Access Type

Free to use. Open source and browser-based. No subscription required.

Licensing Model

Apache-2.0 open-source licence. Users retain rights to their data and exports.

Feature

  • Wide gallery of around 30+ visualisation templates, including some rare forms like alluvial diagrams, dendrograms, sunbursts.
  • Browser-based; no installation required. All data processing is client-side.
  • Supports import of tabular data via CSV/TSV/JSON, copy-paste, URL/SPARQL endpoints.
  • Export to SVG (vector) or PNG (raster), enabling further editing in Illustrator/Inkscape.
  • Open-source with Apache-2.0 licence; you can modify or embed the tool in your stack.
  • Lightweight and focused on designers/data-artists rather than heavy BI dashboards — nice complement to spreadsheets.

FAQ

Can I use the visuals I create commercially (e.g., in a report I sell)?
Yes — since RAWGraphs is Apache-2.0 licensed and you own your data and exported visuals. Just confirm any third-party elements (fonts/colours) for your use case.
How many charts can I generate per month?
There are no usage quotas noted publicly; you can use the web-app freely. But since it’s client-side, performance may slow with very large datasets.
Can I edit the chart after exporting, say change colours, fonts or layout?
Yes — exported SVG is editable in vector-graphic programs (Illustrator, Inkscape). RAWGraphs also allows tweaking visual settings before export, but for finer graphic polishing you’ll likely continue in a design tool.
Does it integrate with my live database or dashboarding system?
Not out-of-the-box. RAWGraphs works with static/tabular data you upload or link to. If you need live-updating or embedded dashboards with user interactivity, you may need a different tool or custom integration.
What about data privacy — is my data sent to the cloud?
The clients state that data processing is done in-browser and no server-side storage is required. (bellingcat.gitbook.io) However, always check the version you use and whether you host locally if you have strict compliance considerations.
If I’m working in a team and want version control, sharing, embedding etc., what do I get on the “top” tier?
There’s currently no public paid tier documented with team seats or enterprise-features. If you require embedding, multi-user management, or large-scale deployment you may need to host the tool yourself or extend it (since it’s open source) or contact the maintainers.
