Turnitin is an academic integrity and writing assessment platform used by schools, universities, and publishers. Its core job is to compare submitted text against a massive database of academic papers, websites, and student work to flag similarities and potential plagiarism. More recently, it has added AI-writing detection and feedback tools.
For educators, grading originality at scale is hard. Manual checks don’t work, and plagiarism—human or AI-assisted—is easy to miss. Turnitin helps instructors identify copied or improperly cited work quickly, maintain academic standards, and give students clearer guidance on how to improve their writing. Institutions use it to enforce consistent integrity policies across courses and departments.
Students submit assignments through an LMS integration or Turnitin’s own interface. The system generates a Similarity Report that highlights matched text and links to sources. Instructors review the report, apply judgment, and optionally use built-in feedback, rubrics, and grading tools.
