Grafana is a tool that gives engineering, devops and observability teams a unified dashboard for metrics, logs and traces so they can monitor performance, detect problems and visualise data.

Alternative To

Grafana is a data-visualisation and observability tool that helps you bring together metrics, logs and traces from many sources, build dashboards, set alerts and explore your data in one place. It offers both self-hosted open-source deployment and a cloud version.

For teams operating production systems or complex infrastructure, having visibility across metrics, logs and traces is key to understanding issues, maintaining uptime and improving performance. Grafana’s strength is its flexibility: you can connect dozens of data sources (e.g., Prometheus, Loki, relational DBs, Elasticsearch) and build visual insights rather than relying on separate tools for each silo.
If you’re a founder, SRE, devops or platform engineer, Grafana gives you a way to surface and act on observability signals in one place rather than scattered dashboards.

You either deploy Grafana (self-hosted) or use Grafana Cloud. You connect data sources (metrics, logs, traces). You build dashboards via a UI or query editor. You set alerts and thresholds. You can extend via plugins. The cloud version includes additional managed services (logs ingestion, tracing, alert routing).

Best for

DevOps teams, SREs, platform engineers, startups and enterprises needing a unified observability solution. Also good for companies already using Prometheus, Loki, Tempo or building their monitoring observability layer.

Access Type

Free self-hosted open-source version; Grafana Cloud (freemium + usage-based paid); Enterprise self-hosted + support.

Licensing Model

The core project is AGPL-3.0 licensed. (GitHub) Commercial use is fine, but modifications/distribution have obligations. For Grafana Cloud/Enterprise you’ll follow the vendor terms.

Feature

  • Connect to a wide variety of data sources (Prometheus, Loki, Elasticsearch, MySQL/PostgreSQL, cloud services) and visualise them in unified dashboards.
  • Rich dashboard builder: charts, graphs, tables, annotations, templated variables, real-time updates.
  • Alerts & notification system: send alerts when metrics or logs cross thresholds.
  • Scale via Grafana Cloud: logs, metrics, traces ingestion, SLO management, root cause analysis (in the cloud version)
  • Plugin ecosystem: community and enterprise plugins for extra data sources, panels, apps.
  • Cost-management tools: track usage, assign cost to departments, get alerts on spend.

FAQ

Can I use the output from Grafana dashboards commercially (e.g., embed for clients)?
Yes — if you self-host the open source version, you can embed/export dashboards subject to the licence (AGPL-3.0) and your own use. For Grafana Cloud/Enterprise, you’ll follow the vendor terms. Always check for restrictions if you’re redistributing dashboards.
How many dashboards/users can I have on the free plan?
The free tier focuses more on usage metrics/logs/series than strictly # of dashboards/users. The included metrics/traces/logs give you budget. If you exceed usage, you’ll be bumped into the usage-based paid tier. See pricing for details.
Can I edit/customise the dashboards and notifications?
Yes — Grafana provides a full dashboard editor, query builder, alerting rules, plugin support. Customisation is strong whether you self-host or use the cloud.
Does Grafana Cloud train on my data or use it for AI model training?
For the observability features, there is no public indication that your data is used to train separate commercial AI models; however, you should review the terms and your data-residency/privacy policy, especially for cloud usage. For Grafana ML features: they are free and the metrics generated don’t count towards billable series.
If we exceed usage, can I upgrade easily?
Yes — in the cloud model, usage-based billing means you scale up by ingesting more metrics/logs/hosts. You’ll also have cost-management tools to track spend.
What distinguishes the Enterprise version from the standard?
The Enterprise version includes enterprise-grade plugins/data-sources, premium support, large-scale retention/ingestion options, deployment flexibility (on-prem, private cloud, hybrid). The vendor states a minimum commit (~$25k/year) for enterprise.
