Session is a tool that enables secure, anonymous messaging for privacy-conscious users so they can chat, call, and share files without exposing metadata.

Overview

Session is a cross-platform messaging app (Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux) that focuses on full anonymity and minimal metadata. You don’t need a phone number or email to sign up — instead you get a random ID.

Most mainstream messengers encrypt message content, but still collect or expose metadata (who talks to whom, when, IP addresses). Session aims to strip away as much of that metadata as possible and decentralize the infrastructure so there’s no central server storing user data or routing info. For privacy-conscious users (journalists, activists, or anyone wanting anonymity) this can be a strong value.

FAQ

Can I use Session for normal chats with friends?
Yes — you can sign up without phone/email and chat securely. But your friends would also need to be using Session (or be convinced to switch) to benefit fully.
Do I own my messages and data?
Yes — messages are end-to-end encrypted and routed via decentralized nodes; you control your account ID and recovery phrase, and your data isn’t stored by a central server or tied to your identity.
Does Session collect metadata like who I chat with or when?
The goal of Session is to minimize metadata collection. The architecture uses onion-routing and decentralized storage to reduce exposure of IP addresses, contact graphs, timestamps etc. However, no system can guarantee absolute anonymity under all threat models.
Can I make voice and video calls on Session?
Yes — Session supports voice/voice-notes and file sharing. Some features like onion-routed voice/video may still be under development as per their docs.
What about account recovery? If I lose my phone?
Since you sign up with a random ID (not email/phone), recovery relies on your recovery phrase or backup method. If you lose that, you could lose access to your account. It’s best to store recovery info safely.
Is it suitable for teams or business use?
Possibly — for teams prioritizing maximum anonymity and decentralization, Session could work. But if you need broader ecosystem integration, enterprise features or large user base, you may need to evaluate carefully.
