KaiOS Technologies is the company behind KaiOS — a mobile operating system specifically designed for “smart feature phones.” Unlike full-blown smartphones, these phones are simpler, often non-touch, but thanks to KaiOS they support 4G/LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS, and apps (via a built-in store).
Smartphones remain expensive, especially for people in emerging markets or rural areas. KaiOS helps bridge that gap by turning affordable feature phones into capable internet devices. That brings basic digital services — messaging, browsing, maps, video, apps — to first-time internet users, seniors, low-income communities, or anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to invest in a full smartphone.
KaiOS is built on a fork of the now-discontinued Firefox OS / B2G (Boot to Gecko) project. It uses web technologies (HTML5, JS, CSS) for apps, meaning developers can build or port apps like they would for the web.
The OS is optimized for low-resource hardware (little memory, non-touch screens, keypads), so phones can stay cheap, with longer battery life, and still support essential features like 4G, Wi-Fi, GPS, camera, Bluetooth, and more.
KaiOS also maintains an app store — KaiStore — offering hundreds to thousands of apps (social, communication, media, utilities) for easy download.
