Magento Open Source

Rating: 4.2
User Satisfaction: 75%
Magento Open Source is a tool that enables developers and merchants to build and run custom online stores so they can sell products, manage catalogs and scale their commerce operations.

Overview

Magento Open Source (formerly known as Magento Community Edition) is a free, open-source e-commerce platform distributed under an open-source license.
It’s self-hosted – you install it on your server/hosting environment, then customize code, themes and modules to build your online store.

You get full control of your store’s architecture, design and integrations. If you have the developer resources (or work with an agency) you can tailor every piece: product cataloging, checkout flows, shipping/inventory integrations, multi-store setups. The lack of a license fee means you can allocate budget to hosting, performance and custom development instead of platform licensing.
For businesses aiming for growth, flexibility, or unique flows (B2B, multi-brand, complex catalogues) this gives a foundation that can scale.

You download or install Magento Open Source, set up your hosting environment (PHP, MySQL/MariaDB, etc.), then choose or build a theme, install or build extensions/modules, configure your store (products, pricing, taxes, shipping, payments). Since it’s open-source you have access to code and can build custom modules.

FAQ

Can I use Magento Open Source commercially (sell online stores, products)?
Yes — the open source license allows you to use the software, modify it and run it commercially. You’ll just need to manage your hosting, security, and extensions.
How many stores/products/users can I handle with Magento Open Source?
There’s no hard limit imposed by license. But practical scalability depends on your hosting environment, architecture and optimization. Heavy traffic or many SKUs may require strong infrastructure.
What integrations are available (payments, shipping, ERP, etc.)?
A large ecosystem of extensions and modules exists for payments, shipping, ERP/CRM etc. Because you have code access, you can also build custom integrations.
What about security and updates?
You are responsible for applying patches and updates for your installation. Since you self-host, you must manage infrastructure, backups and security hardening. The vendor (Adobe) publishes security bulletins.
When should I consider upgrading to Adobe Commerce (paid edition)?
If you need advanced B2B features, high volumes of traffic and orders, cloud-managed infrastructure, SLA support or features not included in the open source edition, then upgrading makes sense.
What are the key costs beyond the “free” platform?
Hosting (servers, storage, CDN), domain/SSL, custom theme/design, extension licenses, development/agency fees, ongoing maintenance and upgrades. Many builds estimate US$30,000+ for a first year.
Is there a community or support network?
Yes — a wide community of developers, agencies, extension authors, plus official documentation and forums. That said, you may need to hire developers or partner agencies for serious deployments.
